“Quizás, Quizás, Quizás” (also known as “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps” in English), is a popular song by Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés. Farrés wrote the music and original Spanish lyrics for the song which became a hit in 1947. Farrés also received much help and inspiration for his lyrics from Cuban First Lady, Mary Tarrero-Serrano. The English lyrics were written by Joe Davis and are not a translation of the Spanish lyrics.
The Gordon Jenkins version, with Tony Bavaar as vocalist, was recorded on August 12, 1949 and released by Decca Records.
The Doris Day version was recorded on November 5, 1964 for Columbia Records and not released as a single, but only on albums. (See Latin for Lovers.) The Doris Day recording was used to great effect in the successful Australian film Strictly Ballroom in 1992.
Nat King Cole regularly performed the song with a heavy American accent. His version appeared on his 1958 album Cole Español.
Others to have recorded the song include Rigo Tovar, Gordon Jenkins, Desi Arnaz, Sonora Matancera, Xavier Cugat, Mantovani, The Stargazers, Pepe Jaramillo, Celia Cruz, Lila Downs and, more recently, Las Rubias del Norte (on Rumba Internationale) and Geri Halliwell (on the America’s Sweethearts soundtrack), as well as her Spice Girls bandmate Emma Bunton. Turkish ska band Athena did a cover named “Senden, benden, bizden”, and the Jamaican ska musician Prince Buster recorded the song in the 60s as “Rude, Rude, Rudee”.
